Jane Austen’s timeless novel Pride and Prejudice has long been a passion of mine. Since the first time I was gently pushed to read it, I was encapsulated. The character of Elizabeth Bennet and her tempestuous relationship with Mr Darcy cemented my status as a hopeless romantic as a youngster.

But what is it that draws me back to reread this story of a headstrong woman almost two decades after I first turned the pages? The fact that the themes in the story are still relevant shows the staying power of the novel. Family trials and tribulations, coupled with an entrancing love story still resonate with young women all over the world.

One aspect of the story is the dresses that the sisters so labour over before the all-important social events depicted. Being an avid fashion follower from a young age, I was taken in by the shape and style of these dresses which still creep into our trends nowadays. Rodarte’s AW/11 collection hinted towards Austen’s style. Whilst not one’s everyday attire, I for one will be the first to snap up one of these gems to show my not so secret love of Pride and Prejudice to the world.

I've been blogging now for a month or so and I am really enjoying writing about my passions (food, drink, music and theatre). There are oodles of mummy bloggers - but 30% of the population are single! what about us? We use appliances...have disposable income...are early adopters because we have free time, and influencers because we socialise with everyone (not just mummies!). I'd love the chance to blog for you, I'm up to speed with social media and techie stuff and I'm London based

I am kitchenless. It’s temporary, my living room is being redecorated so most of its content is in the kitchen with just the largest furniture left in situ, wrapped up Christo style. I’m existing in the study on a diet of local café meals, coffee and red wine. That’s got me thinking about the importance of the kitchen for me. Without it I feel emasculated.

Life revolves around the kitchen. Even when not really ‘cooking’, I concoct with whatever food is around. I love cooking for friends and family, people I trust enough to experiment with. And, when I’m here alone, the smell of stock simmering on the stove or a daube cooking slowly in the oven is what makes this place my home rather than a place to sleep.

I’m sure my love-affair comes from childhood. I grew up in a small seaside town, where my dad was the local GP. Our kitchen, was always full of family and friends with mum cooking and preserving things (recipes always from Mrs Beeton or the Radiation New World Cook Book), and the rest of us talking, eating and socialising. To me, the kitchen really is the heart of the home.

I never understood how important the children of today are for our future until I had one. He is 13 months old and his name is Oliver.

As with any parent, I believe Oliver will be something great, and it is my duty to guide him towards that. My generation has been lost amongst failing political institutions, debt and the constant longing for material possessions. Our children today need a new vision to what we have, to be instilled with the notion that money and possessions do not define you; they are just a huge privilege. If Oliver learns anything from me, I hope it is to go through life with positivity and determination, to know that anything is achievable, dreams can come true with hard work and that persistence pays off. To strive for what he believes in to make the world a better place to be and be thankful for all that he has. Be true to himself and trust his gut feeling, as it is hindsight in disguise. And all with a beautiful sparkly smile on his face provided he stays away from the sweet jar.

I find it hard to understand society sometimes. The world is a very complicated place with complicated and conflicting values. The population of the world is constantly striving to modernise our planet with new laws being passed day-by-day to make everyday life easier and more tolerable. When it comes to fashion though, things are very different. Old trends come back into fashion and all the high-street shops jump on the bandwagon and re-sell things that may have been fashionable in the 60’s and 70’s. The fountain of new ideas is starting to run dry. Shouldn’t we be sporting out-of-this-world clothing by now? Tin foil, digital displays and night-vision goggles? I’m not saying that a blast from the past is bad, but one would think that with all the technology that is within an arms reach to every clothing designer, surely something absolutely fantastical should have been invented by now?

I had a dream the other day that Gok-Wan was on the TV promoting the new and improved Adam and Eve look. Yes, we were all naked with a few ostrich feathers covering the naughty bits. Let’s hope that designers don’t start getting any ideas. Oh my.... What a fashion faux pas that would be.

As a child, I spent endless weekends trailing my parents around heritage sites and museums. Far from being bored, this cemented my passion for museums. They are keepers of stories, treasure houses that show times gone by and reflect life today.

In the UK we are lucky to have some brilliant National museums; the BM, the V&A and National Museums Liverpool to name just a few. We are also lucky in that admission to these museums has been free since 2001. However, this is not the end of the story. Almost every city, town and most villages contain a local museum. Many have free admission.

There are few places left you can take the family for a free, fun day out that is both inspiring and educational. But government cuts are hitting museums hard. You can show your support for the incredible resources on your doorstep by visiting them!

Whether you're into Romans, fine art, toys or canal boats there's a local museum out there for you. They aren't poor relations to the Nationals. Their collections are kept in the public trust – that means they're your museums for your stories and your heritage.
